c-treeRTG COBOL modernization enables enhanced capabilities and reduces TCO

_beaver_street_quotes_sm_real-timec-treeRTG enables companies to modernize and preserve their investment in COBOL in many ways: integration with the latest technologies, enhanced performance, improved data integrity and access to other applications. By doing this, an organization can avoid the high costs, resource consumption and inevitable downtime associated with migrating or rewriting its COBOL system.

Beaver Street Fisheries, Inc., is one of the numerous companies that has modernized its COBOL system with the c-treeRTG data management solution. Beaver Street is now reaping the benefits of enhanced data management and real-time analytics capabilities enabled by c-treeRTG. The company’s CIO, Scott Lane, also said the company would continue to add other modernized functions.

“Since adopting c-treeRTG at Beaver Street Fisheries, we are now able to run BI reports and queries in real-time, straight from the COBOL data files. This tool allowed us to dramatically reduce the time needed to extract the information from our COBOL system to support the business decision process. Next steps will be to improve availability by implementing real-time replication and fail-over,” Lane said.

Tips for rebuilding index files

As you know, changing the index page size (also known as an index node size) is a major database maintenance task, and it should be done carefully after you have completed a full, reliable backup. The FairCom database engine presently uses an 8K byte default page size for its b+tree indices for the solutions in our product line, which includes the c-treeACE multimodel database, c-treeEDGE IoT Database and c-treeRTG data management solution for legacy systems.

Each FairCom index page holds one or more key values. The FairCom database engine supports setting PAGE_SIZE from 512 bytes up to a maximum of 64K (65,536).

Meanwhile, operating systems have a default file block size in which they read and write data. For example, the most recent Linux and Windows operating systems are 4K. Other operating systems may vary.

Managing data near IIoT devices improves quality and real-time decision making

No one will argue against the greatness of the cloud. From reduced in-house infrastructure support to improved mobility, the cloud offers numerous benefits. However, there is one question executives are asking more and more of these days: For all its greatness, must that also apply to its costs?

It is easy to add up the monetary value of cloud-related costs such as bandwidth and data transmission costs. But what is not as easily calculated is the negative impact of high latency, which could result in poor data quality, increased decision-making time and increased risk of system failure. It could also mean the difference in good and bad profit margins, functioning and non-functioning products, and in certain scenarios, life and death.

One solution that can significantly reduce transmission costs and mitigate latency is the c-treeEDGE IoT Database, which allows management of data with a fully functioning data management system on or near the devices that collect it.

Did you know c-treeACE can index anything?
Low-Level API

c-treeACE is often called the developers database. And for good reason: It provides a level of control that few, if any, other databases provide. One area in which extreme control is prevalent is indexing.

In fact, developers can index anything with c-treeACE. This includes indexing arrays of bytes, binary structures, fields in records, SQL columns, XML, JSON, binary serialization protocols, images, etc. This is possible because each key in an index is an array of bytes, and there are no restrictions placed on the byte values comprising a key.

The result is that since anything can be represented by bytes, anything can be indexed. Because FairCom’s database engine compares keys using binary comparisons, its indexes can compare any type of data. And since binary comparisons are the fastest comparisons a computer can perform, c-treeACE provides the fastest possible record lookups, sorts and ordered traversals.

As part of a special series on how companies are adapting and responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, ENGINEERING.com featured a piece on FairCom. The story was published on June 15 and is titled “How distributed operations and a unified culture helped a technology company overcome COVID-19 challenges.”

The story focused on how FairCom and its employees around the world adapted quickly to the changes in their professional and personal lives and how the relatively smooth transition to the new way of doing business happened without any impact on the services and products for its global customer base. The story also discusses how FairCom products have been utilized in the response to COVID-19.
